Health Canada Takes Action to Prioritize Generic Drug Submissions from Canadian Producers

On July 15, Health Canada took an important step to support Canadian pharmaceutical manufacturing with the announcement of a proposed pilot program to prioritize generic drug submissions involving domestic manufacturing.

CPMEA applauds this decision. Canadian pharmaceutical producers have advocated for a priority review process, and we are encouraged to see the Government of Canada hearing the concerns of domestic industry and translating them into meaningful action. We appreciate the openness and collaboration demonstrated by the Minister’s office and Health Canada throughout this process.

The proposed Priority Review Program recognizes the significant contribution domestic manufacturers make through investment in Canadian production and R&D facilities, skilled employment, export capacity, security of supply and public health. It also supports broader government objectives related to economic growth, investment and domestic manufacturing competitiveness.

CPMEA has submitted recommendations to Health Canada to help ensure the program delivers meaningful results for Canadian producers and patients. These include faster and more predictable regulatory timelines, clear eligibility criteria for Canadian producers, earlier communication during the review process and dedicated regulatory support for domestic manufacturers.

We applaud Health Canada for taking this important step to support domestic producers and help Build Canada Strong. A successful Priority Review Program can help Canadian-made medicines reach patients sooner, strengthen domestic manufacturing capacity and improve Canada’s security of supply.
